An Interview with Bridget Harriss

Bridget’s family has crafted beautiful brass hardware for four generations and in 2010 they decided to start a business, Sailormade. Their sophisticated and understated tones transition seamlessly from sea to city so the pieces can be worn all year long. The ocean was Bridget’s inspiration and she turned it into a successful career. Learn more about Bridget in our interview with her below.

What inspired you to start your business?

“Throughout my childhood and into adulthood I have always loved making my own jewelry. I explored interior design through school in attempt to satisfy both my desire to be in a creative industry and one requiring much problem solving. Before a lengthy career could ensue the opportunity to run Sailormade presented itself. My family is traditionally in the brass manufacturing industry and wanted to explore designing and manufacturing our own line of accessories. We grew up with our best memories formed from summers on Cape Cod so “nautical” became a natural inspiration.”

What advice would you give to an inspiring entrepreneur or student?

“My advice for an inspiring entrepreneur would be shoot for 110% but present at 90%. Things might not always be exactly how you envisioned them or what you see as perfect but you can’t let that hold you back from moving forward.”

How has social media influenced or helped your business? Do you have an example?

“Social media is vital for Sailormade. It grows our community and gives our company a voice and personality. We want people to relate to the content we share so that they feel an emotional connection to us.”

Who do you admire and why?

“There are so many people I admire. Every time I go to a new show and meet new business owners and entrepreneurs I am impressed and inspired. Currently, I have been looking towards classic companies like Hermes and Tiffany for design inspiration. They both design beautifully elegant and simple pieces that will never date; I would love for Sailormade to achieve this one day.”

What’s next for you and your business?

“I’m hoping to use this next year to really solidify Sailormade’s branding and create new collections. Our women’s pieces are not as strong as our men’s and I would like to see this grow and develop. I want to design things I want to wear!”
