Interview with Jennifer Horton

Jennifer Horton started ZAGS from a love of being in the sweet sunshine! ZAGS goal is to keep you and your precious ones protected from the harsh sun, all while looking super cute, put together and stylish! With a fun mix of vibrant designs, colors, styles and sizes, ZAGS brings so much more to your wardrobe for living, loving, and lingering in the light. Learn more about Jennifer and ZAGS in our interview with her below.

What inspired you to start your business?

“The idea for ZAGS® started from a love of living in the light. For years, Jennifer Horton kept hoping that she would find the perfect sun-protective wrap to use as she and her active family of five bounced from one sun-filled activity to the next. The product was nowhere to be found, so Jennifer finally created ZAGS® SunWraps. She founded ZAGS® in October of 2015 with the idea of a sun-safe, stylish and unique SunWrap to protect from harmful UV rays. As a lifelong artist and creator, Horton drew most of her inspiration from her years of living in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Inspiration was also drawn from travels abroad with her family. With over 40 distinctly unique designs, most Horton’s own paintings, ZAGS®offer an innovative and beautiful way to enjoy the outdoors all while protecting your skin. ZAGS® are used as shawls, ponchos, sarongs, blankets or bathing suit cover-ups, and are great for protection from hot car seats, boat seats and baby strollers. ZAGS are beach to table ready! What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur or student?

“Another driver to creating ZAGS was her desire to set an example for her children. She wanted to show them importance of using our God given talents. In addition, if you have an idea, and vision for something new, follow it through to find out if it is viable. Hard work is a good thing. Several of her children have started little side businesses, as well.”

How has social media influenced or helped your business? Do you have an example?

“Social media has been an integral part of ZAGS®branding and marketing. We have reached so many more new customers than we ever could have before with minimal expense. An fun example -when we posted a television segment on ZAGS to our Facebook page and received multiple orders from Hawaii and California -places that would have been difficult for a Charleston,SC based Company to gain customers for such low cost.”

Who do you admire and why?

“I greatly admire entrepreneurs that are single mothers. I know how difficult it is to run a small business, I can hardly imagine the strength, determination, and patience it would take to do it all if I were a single mother.”

What is next for you and your business?

“We are looking forward to launching about a dozen new designs for spring that are very watercolor and floral inspired -perfect for springtime’s new beginnings! Additionally, we are launching a new product category called the Beachy Bandeau -available in a mini size for Hair and a maxi size for neck or hair!!! This product size has been inspired by so many sweet Friends and ZAGS® lovers that have been undergone treatment for cancer and other health conditions that require them to be even more careful exposing their skin to harsh, damaging UV light.”

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment thus far?

“I still feel like ZAGS® just coming to fruition from a small idea that I had on the way back from a barrier island on our boat with my family could actually turn into a small business. A business that has received such Swift and sweet support and encouragement by so many people in so many different places and stages in life.”
