Get to Know: Katie Fong

We met Katie Fong through our friend Rhiana of Wear Bows & Smile, she connected us to when we were helping our client Ashley Jacobs of Southern Charm find a last minute outfit for the reunion episode of the show. Katie was so lovely to work with on our one week time crunch, she made the most beautiful white lace two piece pant suit that you may have seen on some behind the scenes Instagram pictures but you’ll see more of it later this month when the show airs.

Katie Fong creates apparel for the most discerning woman and their most important life moments. She believes that clothing should be as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside and insists on the highest level of exquisite craftsmanship and detail. Learn more about Katie and her brand in our interview with her below!

What inspired you to start your business?

“I have been wanting to be a designer for earlier than I can remember. My parents say I started drawing when I was four and as soon as I found out what a career was, I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer. After getting my BFA in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and apprenticeships at Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, and Stella McCartney, I worked for a Maggy London brand in textile and design development. During those years I free-lanced on the side, designing and creating one of a kind garments for customers. I was working 24/7 and one day I woke up and decided to leave my job to take on my brand full time. It was the hardest but the best decision I ever made!”

What advice would you give a student or aspiring entrepreneur? 

“You need to be brave, take risks, and have tough skin, but above ALL…be kind. Kindness always wins – you never know you may meet or who may surprise you.”

How has social media influenced or helped your business? Do you have an example? 

“Yes! I work with real women of all different shapes and sizes and believe in a product that is not only simple and elegant, but beautifully made on the inside as well. Social media has allowed me to reach out and share my work (and behind the scenes!) with those who appreciate timeless clothing. I love hearing feedback from my followers – it just so happens that I have several current clients who discovered my brand on social media!”

Who do you admire and why?

“From a creative standpoint, Oscar de la Renta – it was an honor to apprentice with him for 3 years. He truly understood how to make women feel beautiful and he was a genuinely wonderful person. From a personal standpoint: my parents and my husband. My mother and father taught me how to be fearless but humble and generous. I admire their perseverance through the highs and lows of life and I hope that one day I can be just as incredible as they are. My husband shows me how to stand for what I believe in and never give up – he’s my rock.”

What is next for your business?

“I’m currently working on expanding my current ready to wear collection, and I’m hoping to officially launch a small bridal collection within the next few years. My team is slowly growing as well, and I couldn’t be more excited!”

What do you think has been your greatest accomplishment thus far?

“My greatest accomplishment thus far is successfully making my clients feel happy and beautiful. Nothing can make my day better than getting a text, email or phone call from someone who couldn’t be happier to share photos and comments they received on something I designed for them.”

Favorite quote?

“We rise by lifting others.” J

Favorite piece in the collection?

“The Sterling Top and the Brooke Skirt. The Sterling top is a silk georgette blouse with pin tucks and ruffles – we offer it with and without a sleeve. The Brooke skirt is a silk crepe skirt that is made to look like a bias skirt, but it’s cut on the straight grain so it doesn’t cling. Both pieces can be made in over 300 colors!”
