What Inspired you to start your business?
“I made a hooded scarf out of some cozy thrift and cashmere and wool sweaters, simply because I wanted one and couldn’t find them in stores. When I wore it out to the world, people noticed and they would ask me: “what is that?” “I want one!” I started to take a hint when this happened multiple times, and launched the business as a small Etsy shop to test the concept.”
What advice would you give a student or aspiring entrepreneur?
“A lot of times in the media and press we see stories about entrepreneurs who are labeled as the overnight success. But when you dig a bit deeper, you find out that they’ve been working on it for 7 to 10 years. There are different levels of success and different thresholds. I think one of the most important things for aspiring entrepreneurs to remember is that life is a marathon and not a sprint, and to make sure you are passionate about being in your business for the long-haul, however long it takes to get to where you want to go.”
How has social media influenced or helped your business? Do you have an example?
“Social media has been a great way to gather our community of customers and communicate with them outside of our email newsletter and website. We have also been really lucky to have a small handful of influencers (celebrities) post photos wearing their mantles which helped us reach a much larger audience on social media then we would have been able to on her own.”
Who do you admire and why?
I admire entrepreneurs who create jobs, specifically well paying jobs with good work/life balance, for their employees. Until you become an entrepreneur, you don’t realize how much goes into launching a company and creating an income stream that is solid enough to support employees. For me, they are modern day alchemists.”
What is next for your business?
“This December marks 5 years from when I sold my first mantle! I’m really excited about celebrating this, and using it as an opportunity to ultimately celebrate all of our customers and the mantles they take up in their own lives. This fall we will also be releasing a new collection with an affordable luxury price point that will be a nice compliment to a lot of our higher end pieces.”
What do you think has been your greatest accomplishment thus far?
“Im proud of myself for turning challenging moments into opportunities, and always figuring a way around obstacles. As an entrepreneur this is something you have to learn how to do time and time again. It’s really hard work, but also very rewarding and it teaches you a lot about life.”
How would you describe your brand in 3 words?
“Adventure, Empowerment, Sustainability”
