Advice for Young Entrepreneur

You may or may not know but I started Piqued PR at the age of 23. Yes, you heard that right, just a year out of college! Seems crazy but everything just fell in place (not to say I didn’t hustle my butt off), seemed right and I went for it! Being a young entrepreneur isn’t easy though, lots of people will question you, doubt you and even deny you just for the number of years you’ve walked (and worked) the earth. When meeting people for the first time, even still to this day as a 28 year old, they’d go, “Wow, you look so young! How old are you?” While it would be so inappropriate for me ask their age, many people find it okay to call you out for you youngness. I still get frustrated by this situation but have learned some tricks to share with you:

Dress Up– I don’t mean play dress up like a 5 year old in your mom’s shoes that are 10 sizes too big. Instead, think of the quote, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”. If you want to be boss babe CEO then dress for it. if you dress maturely and not in trendy young pieces, people will forget your age. Always be put together and appropriate.

Own Your Mistakes– if you mess up, own up to it and make it right. Sometimes this means you fixing it for free, taking the loss out of your own pocket. People will respect you for owning your mistake, apologizing and doing whatever steps you need to do to make it right. One thing not to do? Blame it on your age or inexperience. A past client and I once had a falling out, she blamed it on me being young and not having enough experience, when really it was just a difference in expectations and communication on both our parts.

Your Work– let your work speak for itself. The naysayers cant’s argue with proven success rates and happy clients. Have a portfolio ready to share with past work and be willing to offer up some referrals for them to connect with who can highly recommend you.
