Evelyn Henson is dedicated to creating colorful fine art and gifts that inspire you to lead a brightly decorated life. She shares her passion with the world by running her own business. Evelyn’s illustrations are pieces you won’t find anywhere else! We truly love this talented artist, find out why in our interview with her below.
What inspired you to start your business?
“I had just been painting for fun and my friends encouraged me to open an Etsy shop. It took me about a year to get the courage, but their support was my inspiration!”
What advice would you give to an inspiring entrepreneur or student?
“1. Put yourself out there and start connecting with people! Whether you're an artist, blogger, jewelry designer, whatever, it's easier than ever to share your brand online by creating a website and/or sharing on social media. Even if you don't feel like you're ready, it's never too soon to start building those relationships. As an artist, I love getting feedback through instagram and it helps me see what people are connecting with so I can determine what to sell.
2. Find something that makes you different and build that into your brand. It's so important to stand out!”
How has social media influenced or helped your business? Do you have an example?
“Absolutely! Instagram immediately connected me to an audience when I first started selling my art. It's one of the main traffic drivers to my site and continually introduces new people to my work. For example, I literally just got an email a few hours ago from a retailer wanting to carry my work after discovering my work on instagram. It's crazy the kind of connections you can make!”
Who do you admire and why?
“I have sooooo many people I'm following on instagram who I just think are SO COOL! I admire Maghon Taylor's bright and cheerful personality, Jordan Jones' packed party hustle, and Gray Malin's thoughtful and creative collaborations with other brands. I'm also a MAJOR Reese Witherspoon fan----I love how she is transforming the movie/tvlandscape with her production company, everything about Draper James, and also stalk her book club.”
What’s next for you and your business?
“With 2018 just beginning, my two major goals are-----1. I want to do more licensing collaborations (for example--these toss designs pajamas). It's a great opportunity for me to put my work on more products without having to manufacture the items myself. Like I mentioned above, I think Gray Malin does a great job with this and I have loved seeing his photography on Sperry shoes, suitcases, etc. 2. I'm also going to start focusing more on branded partnerships and collaborations. I've really enjoyed doing art for various brands in the past and hope to do more illustration work for brands in 2018.”
