What inspired you to write your book?
We don’t talk enough about how hard your twenties are. You’re dealing with a lot financially, professionally, and emotionally and I wish someone had stressed to me that it will get better. I wanted to create a funny handbook with varied, empathetic and intelligent voices that could help others deal with the quagmire of post-grad life, for everything from career to hangover and wedding gift advice.
What advice would you give a student or aspiring author?
Just keep writing and discovering your own voice. Don’t feel pigeonholed by what’s popular in the moment, the great thing about the internet is that you can always find other people’s work to look up to.
How has social media influenced or helped your book? Do you have an example?
Oh god, I’ve met too many friends from Twitter and Instagram and it’s great to commiserate with people you know you already have something in common with. Finding a creative community through social has helped in every facet of my life, and I don’t know if I would have stayed in NYC without that support system.
Who do you admire and why?
Carrie Fisher because she’s hilarious and talented and admitted to the world that she banged Harrison Ford before taking her leave of us.
What is next for you?
Going to continue working full-time, writing my next book, and freelancing! I’m so tired! But it’s fun and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
